The best live singers...according to me
Ronnie James Dio
And I’m probably biased on this, because he’s my favourite singer ever. I’ve seen him play live many times, with Dio, Black Sabbath, and Heaven and Hell, which of course was also Black Sabbath by another name. His voice and lyrical theme combined to make him legendary. He was always a strong personality, and that led to some good opinions about him, some not so, but the one thing everyone agreed on was that he was a singer first, last and always, and he was thoroughly focussed on it. He always delivered, either on record or on stage. Simply untouchable, may he rest in piece.
Amy Lee
I saw Evanescene just the once (so far), back in about ‘03. I’d heard the Fallen album, and I was sold. And on the back of one album, the band headlined Wembley Arena, which is pretty damn impressive. The band more then stepped up to the challenge, and Amy Lee’s voice was just immense. I’m really really glad that both her and her band have gone the distance, they absolutely deserve it.
Joey Tempest
Underestimate Europe at your peril, they’re so much more than a poppy hair metal band, and even more so in recent years, with War of Kings a bona fide heavy metal classic. Joey’s voice is clear and strong, much like the Swedish air and climate, so it’s probably no surprise where he gets is amazing set of pipes from. I recently saw them play live on The Final Countdown 40th, yes 40th anniversary show, and believe me, Joey’s voice hasn’t aged a bit.
But if you want absolute legend, someone whose like we will never see again, then that accolade has to go to Freddie Mercury. I’ve been blessed by the bands I have managed to see play live over the years, but my absolute biggest regret is that I never managed to see a Queen concert. I so wish. There are no words to describe this man’s talent, all you can do is listen and wonder. May he rest in peace.
And of course (shameless plug), if we’re going for fictional singers, then it would have to be Cold Steel’s Maxwell Diabolo.
