Hormone testing in the US military
Sounds a lot like project Real Man, my very own fictionally created stance taken by Charlie Scudsen, an American President.
But upon looking into this, it’s deliberate policy being rolled out by the actual US administration.
It seems that Pete Hegseth wants older male members of the US military to have their testosterone levels topped up as their natural levels, like naturally, decline. His argument in favour of this is that soldiers will be more aggressive if they’re what he calls ‘High-T.’
It seems to only apply to male soldiers, because of course it’s only men in combat roles and only men who do the fighting.
I can’t say that I’m convinced by any of this. I don’t think it’s been a problem for any military around the world in the past, and soldiers older than 30, the age at which testosterone in males starts to decrease, is kind of the age at which soldiers move into command roles and aren’t in the vanguard of any action.
The whole thing kind of reminds me of Universal Soldier, an utterly fictitious film that while entertaining, wasn’t in the least bit serious.
And that’s quite ironic, really, because you can’t really take Pete Hegseth seriously either. I mean, referring to the troops as warriors makes him sound like an extra in a straight to TV war film.
Still, I shouldn’t complain, because stuff like this over the last few decades, on both sides of the Atlantic have been a fabulous source of inspiration.
But I still think I thought about this one first!
