What happened to the Rhodesian Light Infantry?
They were ultimately disbanded.
I mean, let’s face it, an all-white (European, as the Rhodies called it) unit was never going to last long once Mugabe took over, no matter how good a unit they were.
And believe me, the Rhodesian Light Infantry were awesome. They were formed in 1961 and were at the forefront of the Fireforce operations in the Bush War of the 1970’s. They were roughly the same size as a British infantry battalion, and they were all para trained.
The tempo of operations was such that sometimes they’d do more than one operational jump a day, into contact. They had combat experience like no other unit out there.
In short, they were ultimate badass, the dog’s bollocks.
They were disbanded on 17th October 1980.
Politically, you can see why they did it, but militarily, getting rid of those ouens was like chucking away the crown jewels.
I don’t think you’ll ever see their like again in any country’s military.
