Maxwell Diabolo
Maxwell Diabolo is the singer in Cold Steel, and it's the job he was born to do. Brash, loud, and with a killer smile, he's your typical metal frontman.
And his singing's not bad either.
Always described as having long black hair and an oversized hook-shaped nose, his slightly piratical appearance is matched by his obsession with the subject, which was almost his, and the band's undoing in Cold Steel on the Rocks. So far, there isn't too much detail about his origins, but you could easily imagine him coming from Devon, and sprouting a Barbossa-type accent.
But when he's onstage, he really comes into his own. It's his natural home, and when he's not shooting himself in the foot, there's no one to match him.
Unfortunately, Maxwell's talent as a singer is only matched by his irresponsibility. He loves the rock star lifestyle, and he also loves that someone else- usually Johnny Faslane- is making the decisions for him. And that kind of immaturity quite often gets him, and the rest of the band, into a lot of trouble.
It's usually Maxwell that leads the rest of the band astray, usually by playing the 'we're a metal band' trip on them, but he's also instrumental in some of their more hair raising escapes, standing up to armed prison guards in the Caribbean, and also a man to man fight against a feral ex-squaddie in We Are Cold Steel.
Along with Cold Steel, Maxwell's had his fair share of bad performances, usually self inflicted. But when he's on top of his game, as a singer he's unbeatable. He can own the stage better than Jagger, sing better than Dio, and he looks better than Lillmans. Everyone in Cold Steel plays their part to the nth degree, including Maxwell Diabolo who's the consummate metal frontman.
If my books were ever to be filmed, and if I was asked, who would I get to play the part of Maxwell Diabolo? Well, he'd have to grow his hair long or get extensions, but I'd go for Charlie Day.
