Rachel Shaw

The Cold Steel books are, well, about Cold Steel, but Johnny Faslane is kind of a central character, and you can't have a central character without him having an amazing partner.
And there are few women in Johnny Faslane's world as amazing as Rachel Shaw.
If you've not read any of my books (links below), Rachel Shaw first appears in Cold Steel on the Rocks. The band's UK tour isn't going too well, Johnny Faslane has only just been give the job of managing the band, and he has to arrange a press conference in Manchester. One of the reporters asking the questions is Rachel. In being evasive with her questions, it only makes Rachel more curious, and by the end of the novel...well, if you haven't read it yet, I don't want to put any spoilers here.
Suffice to say that by the time We Are Cold Steel comes along, Rachel's an indispensable part of the team.
As a reporter, Rachel is definitely multi-talented. She writes articles, and she's also an accomplished photographer, which, given Cold Steel's ability for creating disastrous photo-ops, can sometimes cause a lot of tension, as quite often she's the only one in the mix who wants those embarrassing pictures to get out.
She's strong and feisty, as Johnny finds out very early on. No one tells her what to do, but she's also loyal, and Johnny, and Cold Steel have good reason to thank Rachel for that on many occasions. Being good at her job is almost the band's undoing from time to time, and at other times, it's their salvation.
Having a reporter as a character is very helpful for a writer. They can be used to find out all sorts of stuff, they sometimes skirt the grey areas around what's legal, and sometimes they can ask some really awkward questions, which Rachel excels at.
Rachel's tall, about the same height as Johnny Faslane, has long black hair, and uses lemongrass perfume. Every time Johnny catches a scent of lemongrass, it's enough to make him forget everything else and only think about Rachel. Rachel knows this; she's a woman after all, and she makes the absolute most of the effect she has on him. And Johnny doesn't mind that one bit.
So, who would play the part of Rachel if my books were ever filmed? My choice would be Kate Beckinsale.

  1. Hi Rick, thanks for sharing. Kate Beckinsale is a great choice. If only you could have got your books published in the 90s, I'm sure Joanne Whalley could have nailed the part.

    1. Hi Ed, I'm with you there, Joanne Whalley would have rocked it as feisty, no-nonsense Rachel Shaw in the 90's. Good choice.
